That sucks. Could your son have dumped something in those tanks? Anyone else home while you were gone? temp? sabotage? conspiracy amongst the fishes?
That's what I was thinking...your son or baby might have decided to make some of the tanks look better and added something...
That's awful, Chris. I'm really sorry. I hope we can all help you get to the bottom of this. :(
Weird question, but how did the dead fish look? Freshly dead? Mouths open wide, or closed? How are all of your shrimp? I would assume that if something was in the air, the shrimp would have died pretty quickly, possibly even before the fish. But it seems so selective...
I have tanks right next to these tanks and theyre fine, no deaths.
What I just quoted is key.
I agree, this can't be power outage related. Pesticides have been ruled out.
If it was in the air, it could not have been so selective in which tanks it entered. The only exception would be if the tanks with dead fish were open top and the others were not.
It has to be something that got into those tanks, but that did not get into the other tanks.
I am so very sorry to hear of your massive losses. Must be a horrible sight to come home to.
if some of the tanks are fine, while others had a quick wipeout..........i'm gonna lean towards a wayward family member for now.i lost fish because of an exterminator at an apartment.had maybe 20 tanks, wiped out 3,the others were fine.
Chris isnt a newby, hes been doing this for some time, but at the same time Iam thinking along the same lines of everybody else. Any airfreshners, or powders(baby powder, talc, etc) close to the tanks? Either which way Iam sorry for the loss, I know youve helped me out in the past, so I am lending a hand back to you. Ive got 12 Blue Zambian frontosa fry for you to come get whenever your ready.

Nope, after reading Chris' responses it likely wasn't power related. The computer would have suffered first, usually.
Man, Chris, I wish I had something to offer. I lost a tankful of discus a couple decades ago after one of my kids dropped some stuff in the tank.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.
One time my brother lost an entire tank of fish because his 3 year old son dumped a whole shaker of salt in there.
Stuff happens, I just find it weird that it happened to every tank.

But it didn't happen to every tank. He had tanks side-by-side with one of the two being okay and the other experiencing massive deaths. This makes me think it has to be something someone put in the individual tanks themselves. A child putting something in the tanks is the most likely cause here.
Brownsnoutuk, have you figured out what happened? Any changes to the other tanks that were unaffected?
