not sure of tank size, filter etc.he had a bunch of fish in 4 tanks.crowding grow out fish together=no big deal.but when things go wrong ,bad things happen quick.testing water that has 100 dead fish in it probably wont tell you alot.there is a common factor in these 4 tanks, not just bad luck.

Thanks everyone for the help.
I still have no idea what happened.
Everything someone has suggested has been ruled out.
I had the bembas in a 55 gallon, closed top. I hadnt changed their water in about 2 weeks, hadnt added anything or taken anything out of the tank. Basically the only thing I had done was drop veggie flake in through the glass lids. Canister filters.
The veggie flake was only fed to the bembas and calvus, but was also fed to all the shrimp.
The calvus were in a 55g open top and a 75g with lids. They ate both the veggie flakes and the mixed flake I was feeding the fronts. These are the only tanks I had performed any maintenance on recently (<week) and that involved cleaning the filters only. Canister filter and emperor 400's.
The front tank had been fed mixed cichlid flake and shrimp pellets, nothing else. No water change in the last week. Sealed top but open top 55g sump that the kids could have put something in. (There isnt anything in there as of now.)
The fish were all dead with mouths open. The fronts had partially burried themselves in the sand or hidden under the holey rock. None of the fish were actually floating, they were all resting on the bottom of their tanks. When I got home I pulled 2 ABN from the tank, 1 died later in the afternoon, the other (5" male) seems 100% fine.
