  • Odd eliminations from female yellow lab

Okay, I am going to try to best explain this without posting pictures, which I will have to do tonight when I am at my computer and can easily download them from my phone.

I have a female yellow lab (recently spit babies, probably about 2 or 3 weeks ago) that, for lack of a better term, seems to be pooping out eggs. When I first saw her, I spotted 2 large (about twice the size of yellow lab eggs), pinkish spots that resembled small tumors around her anus. They reminded me of the yolk sacs on stripped fry, actually. The people around me said that they had first noticed this this morning, and every once in a while they would drop from her when she moved quickly. I was doubtful, thinking they were some kind of growth, but then one dropped. I wanted to grab it, but it was quickly eaten by one of her tankmates. In its place emerged a clear sphere that looked exactly like an egg. Over a period of about 15 minutes, while I was trying to get some good pictures for you guys on my phone, about 3 more dropped from her. The last large pink one, and two more small clear ones.

Does anyone have any idea what's happening? Or has anyone seen this happen before? She's got lots of people worried for her, and wanting to know what's up. :)

I know it's tough without pics, and the ones I got weren't great, being taken with my phone, but I'll post them anyway tonight.

    Thanks for any help.

Well, like I said, they aren't great, and I don't think they'll help at all, but here you go:

MB -- I would check back with this fish in a few days. Problem is that if this fish is infected with something and others are eating its "poo" then most likely its spreading from fish to fish. Are all the others eating normally ?
If you need to medicate the medication I would recommend first is Metro.
Treat the whole tank as most likely everyone is infected with the parasite if it is a parasite in the tank.
When is the next time you will see this fish again ?

        Thanks for the help, Jesper.

Everyone is eating normally. This tank is full of PIGS. :) Even the yellow lab female is eating normally. It was hard taking pictures because wherever I put my hand or my phone the fish would flock and take up the whole shot. :)

Would some sort of parasite make her release eggs like this? The first two "spheres" were an opaque pink, but the rest that came out of her looked exactly like eggs, size-wise and appearance.

I will most likely see the fish next on Monday; I'll be somewhere else tomorrow. The problem with treating is that it's tough to get to the tank every day or every other day in order to monitor the treatment - but it's doable.

I guess I'll just wait until I see her again? Or wait until someone calls with any news, but hopefully they won't.

        Thanks again.

I know this is a weird idea, but can fish 'miscarry' their eggs?

No idea. It almost seems that is the case with this one.

Are there any male yellow labs in the tank ? Did she shimmer and then a while later an egg comes out or something. Did she have any interest in the egg ? did she even now it was coming out ? ie would she turn for it ?

There are two males in the tank with her. They were both in their respective territories the whole time I was there, and she was swimming mostly in the upper half of the tank. The males were mainly on the bottom, on both sides of one of the plants in there. They didn't seem to care about her at all.

She did not shimmy or make any other spawning-type movements. She paid as much attention to what was dropping out of her as she would to normal poop, and when they dropped she didn't change her attitude - just kept on swimming without a glance.

Well, it's been a crazy week, but I was finally able to check on her just now.

To my surprise, she's holding again! So I guess whatever was happening wasn't too much trouble for her. :) I can't tell if she's still pooping out weird things because she's hiding behind the plants. I'm about to do a water change, so I might be able to see her then. But I'm thinking she's fine.

                  Thanks for the help! :)
