I woke up this morning to the biggest and badest discus at mid water level standing on his tail fin gasping for air as if he were at the top trying to get air. None of the others are showing this sign. I tested the water for chlorine with a reading of zero. I am now proceeding with a major water change since the only thing that changed from yesterday was I did a WC last night so I figure something has to be in the water. I did not do a full water test as I just figured not enough time if I want to save him. Any suggestions on how to save him would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, no. Let us know how he does after the water change. Anything different about his appearance that you can see? Also, let us know the parameters when you have time for testing.
Hope everything turns out all right..."Millennium hand and shrimp!"

I hope so too. Its still filling up since I am running it through the carbon filter. He is still showing the same signs right now. The one thing I noticed is when the water level was much lower he wouldnt even go to the top to get air he stayed closer to the bottom. So I am unsure why he is acting like he needs air if the water top was only a few inches above him and he wouldnt go to it.

Is he swimming all right? Or is he struggling? Have his colors changed at all? Does he have any visible wounds?
All the possibilities I can think of would most likely be affecting the others in the tank, as well, so I'm stumped! :("Millennium hand and shrimp!"

I did a 50-60% water change around 2pm yesterday through my carbon bottle and noticed a number of my trophs hanging around on the bottom gasping for air. I triple dosed with prime and put air in the tank and they seem to be doing alot better now.
I thought it was the shrimp mix I gave them before the water change, but it sounds like Brazoria county did something with the water... Good luck.300g - Petrochromis Texas "Red Fin" Longola, Petrochromis Red Bulu, Tropheus Red Rainbow Kansanga.

I droped in an air stone. I checked the water params and the Ammonia and Nitrite read zero. No change in his condition but I didnt expect it to be a quick recovery just hope he has a recovery.

Tail-standing. I think he's sick, and not so much that it's the water (unless there was something in the water that exacerbated the illness). But I think you did good with the water change. Did you add any salt? I'm just going over in my head, "What would Dan do?" Formaline, salt, heat. But I think formaline is deadly for your assassins. How's his color? Is he eating? Our Fishhouse

Just poured in a bunch of prime not sure how many doses but figured it couldnt hurt.

I called Dan and he said add salt. So I did that as well. I figured if he is stressed from this formalin will only surely kill him. My only issue with disease is why would it be all of the sudden. Yesterday he appeared fine and eating like the pig he his and still getting in fights. Then I woke up this morning and now he is doing this.

I guess on the same note if its something in the water why isnt all of them doing it either. I am conflicted

Since he didn't start acting like this until after your water change it was probably something in the water. Make sure when you're using your carbon filter to fill your tank as slow as practical to ensure the water has as much contact time with the carbon as possible. This is a chemical reaction that is occuring where the carbon is the catalyst and the amount of chlorine components removed is directly related to the residence time. Also, if you're using Prime, as well, do not overdose too much. I've heard bad things when people overdose with Prime. When I use Prime in addition to my carbon bottle I usually use less then required for the volume change. Lastly, put as much air into the tank as possible. Good luck!

negative. Not to get premature about this but his breathing as come down and he isnt tail standing. He is somewhere in between tail standing and normal swimming. You would think I have an ill kid since I called into work and I am just sitting here watching him to make sure he is ok.
