my mom has a 2.5 gallon tank with a divider in the middle with a betta on either side. both have been in this tank for about 5-6months now. She said one of them has developed a "bubble" right behind his gills. she said he still swims fine and stills goes to the top as if he was ready for food. What is this thing and how to fix it?

hard to make a diagnosis from that description.

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I was thinking tumor, too, but how likely would it be that it happens behind both gills? Unless I misread the OP.
Trogdor was a man. Or maybe he was a dragon man. Or maybe he was just a dragon. But he was still TROGDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR!

You know, fish are great. I love my fish. But what I really want is a monkey.
