  • K..tried everything..now what?

K, I have been having issues with cloudiness in a tank. The 30 Xtall I won at FOTAS I have been having issues with. First, found that the trim was cracked, and if I filled the tank to the bottom of the trim(looking from the outside) it somehow LEAKED. So I have not been filling the tank all the way but leaving it a 1/2 inch under the trim line. So I got that issue fixed, but meanwhile, the entire time the tank has been filled, it has been cloudy, I took the initial cloudiness as NTS...just a new tank cycling...figured the cloudiness would go away. But no, it hasn't. I had 2 5-15 HOB's and a power head in the tank..thinking it mabey just didn't have enough current to the bottom. Didn't help. I have done 75% WC's....helped for a day, but then right back to the cloudiness. I had petrified wood in the tank, took it out. Had native driftwood in the tank...took that out too. Thinking maybe one of these was doing something to the water. SO all I had left is the black sand....this is now all that has been in the tank for 2 weeks....now I hooked up a brand new 2217 canister to it last week(got it at HAW) thinking now I got it..this canister will devour all stuff in tank...STILL NO LUCK!:furious::furious::furious:

What else can I do? I didn't want to revert to chemicals...but that is the only thing I have not tried yet. I planned on making this tank into a small Tang tank...with a rock pack, but until this cloudiness is gone...everything has been taken out, an nothing goes back in until it is solved. I funny enough ended up coming accross 2 other 30 talls...but this one is giving me MAJOR cloudiness issues....HELP:ertrink:

I can only think of two things. One, it may be some sort of microbes floating or swimming around. If you have access to a microscope, it might help confirm that. If this is the case, Fish Gallery still has some freshwater clams for I think about three bucks. One of these (and only one - don't want them breeding) might start to siphon the microbes in as food. The only other thing I can think of is that you might check your tap water for calcium deposits or something. It might be something in the pipes coming loose.

You know, fish are great. I love my fish. But what I really want is a monkey.

Let time take it's course. Let the filters eat the nitrates then it will be clear

I am hesitant to use chemicals too, but I used Seachem's Stability and after 1 day the water is now crystal clear.

Just dose like it says on the bottle.

          Best of Luck!!

I have always used diatom filters to remove the haze from my tanks but recently I set up a tank with an UG filter and 2 power heads (along with the standard HOB) and filtering the water through the substraight works just as good as any diatom filter. You can also use one of those micron size paper filter cartridges before or after your canister and get good results.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

K...tried the carbon bag, and a 80% WC...it was clear for 2 days, the back to the cloudy haze. I got the eheim 2213 and a power head on the tank...still no luck.

                    :furious:Now What?

This tank is driving me MAD:evil:.

Haven't tried purigen yet. Was kinda waiting to see if it would just clear up...and it hasn't.

It has a black sand (forget the namebrand) bottom....and thats it. I have syphoned the sand, and initially rinsed it really well to before putting it in the tank. Thats all that is in the tank...as far as fish. It has about 12 guppy culls, and breeder schoool of Albino Cories....and they act fine, no stress. So it really has me puzzled as far as what is causing the haze...Will post pics in a minute.

Even added some Java moss (been in tank for 2 weeks now) to see if it was a bio/algae problem...no luck. Oh..forgot about the plecos..there are 3 of them in there too...and everyone act, and eats just fine. No breathing issues...this thing really has me stumped. I though about UV...but buying a UV for a 30gal...just seems overkill. But thanks for the idea john.

Like Brian said, it really looks like a substrate issue... Was the sand some sort of EcoComplete or other that you're not supposed to rinse before putting in the tank? Like, did it have "bacteria" in it, like some are labelled to have?

You said you rinsed it, though...

What other media do you have in your filters? Any filter floss or fine filter pads?
