  • Thyroid tumors in Brichardi?

Has anyone else had a problem with Brichardis developing a swelling in their throat area? Eventually, the lower jaw becomes deformed, making it difficult for the fish to eat. I've tried looking up the symptoms and the only thing I saw that might match was a thyroid tumor caused by an iodine deficiency. I've never done anything special to boost iodine in a tank before. I've used some Tang buffer in the tank, and some iodized salt, but can't tell that it's made any difference. I've wondered if the condition is reversible. Could it be a hereditary defect? I've had these fish since they were small (auction), and I'm pretty sure they were normal when they were younger.
MY MANTRA: Yes, I CAN have too many fishtanks!

I' have had the same proble in the past.

I was told that they were a 4th + generation strain and it was caused by that.

Looking foward to hearing more input on this.

You mean that they're too inbred, I guess. Yes, I wondered if this was part of the problem. Well, I never meant to breed a lot of these, and it looks like the best thing to do is euthanize the adult that is already badly deformed and having trouble eating, and try not to raise any more from their siblings. With tank space kind of tight right now,I never meant for them to increase their numbers a lot anyway.

Do you have any pictures? It might be helpful, especially if this happens to others.

That's too bad, though, sorry to hear. :(
