  • my fish got bloat

2 days ago, i changed from eheim 2217 canister filter to wet and dry trickle filter in my 135g tank with 26 adult red rainbow tropheus and 20 juvi ikola. the fish was fine , ate well before i installed the wet dry filter ( all new media, bioballs). this morning, i got one red rainbow swimming so weird, side by side, i separated that one to the 10g hospital tank. an hour later, i came back, i saw another one with pop-eyes. i put that one to hospital tank, i treated both 10g and 135g with clout, epsom salt, temp at 80.
I'm gonna do water change about 50% every three days, put clout, epsom salt everyday like the bottle say.
is this good enough? should i do something else or just leave them like that.
any advice will be appreciated. Thanks.

i think the nitrate spike-when changing from old media to new media caused the fish to bloat. i might be wrong.

Tony was the 2262 on the tank the whole time? That filter and the substrate should of had enough beneficial bacteria to sustain the bio load.

yeah the 2260 has been in the tank for 1 month, i thought its good enough, so when i installed the wet dry filter, i used new media, bioball.
let me test the water to verify this.

It's crappy Lake Houston water. All the chemicals they add when we go into the rainy season and the inversion of the lake. One of my tanks has bloat too. The ammonia from my local MUD is causing many problems. Ultimate and I are on the same water. Alex from ultimate told me he's had dozens of customers who lost whole tanks from this poison they are calling water. He lost 8 tanks before the employees got him and he figured it out. 400 angel fish and 100's of other fish dead. All this in the last 2 weeks. Evidentley water changes are now a deadley thing to do! The only reason I did not have mass loss is because of the carbon filter. But it's not enough. I'm going to make a small water treatment plant on my back porch till these IDIOTS running my MUD district figure this !%&*^#@ out.

Tony do Geoff's clout treatment and you will bo fine.

Alex if you read this Thanks for helping me tonight!!

man, changing water might me the reason. my tank was dirty with poops the last three days, i did a massive water change-like 85%, filled water back and installed the wet dry filter. i think im gonna go back to my regular routine-50% every 4 days.
just fed the fish with nls in soaking metro, the fish in 135g ate right from my hand, but the ones in hospital ones did not eat at all.
i will follow Geoff's treatment plan and see what going on the next days.

I would test the water straight out of the tap to see if your water has chloramines with the attached ammonia. An ammonia reading of 2 ppm will tell you if you do. If it does consider doubling up on the dechlorinator for future water changes.

                    my fish got bloat

Tony, your new filter is not the problem, your 2262 can handle the bioload without problems. I agree with John, something is wrong with the water, I got one of my tanks with bloat and lost 2 yesterday before hit the tank with metro. I always use a carbon cartridge and sediments cartridge for filter my tap water but looks like is not enough, something is stressing the fish and cause the bloat. My bloat treatment is the next.
Day 2 W/C, 1 table spoon per every 10g of salt and 1 teaspoon of metro twice a day every 100g. No feed and no ligths.
                    Day 2 nothing
                    Day 3 75% W/C and repeat day 1 treatment
                    Day 4 nothing
Day 5 same of day 3 and feed a little
Day 6 nothing and feed a little
Day 7 75% W/C and metro. Feed them normal and keep an eye open.
Day 8 add carbon for remove chemicals and turn on ligths.
I use this treatment with very good results before and actually this is what I'm doing with my sick tank.
I know how you love your fish and this is sad, hope they can make it.

thanks John for that article, they need to get the purification process done as soon as possible, or we have to install some types of purification plants like micro or ultra filtration.
one of the author, Shankar Chellam, is my environmental prof in UH, he got a saltwater tank, but i bet he knows anything about bloat-affected by the water.
