Help!! whats wrong with my fish?

so I was sitting on the computer and i heard a loud splashing and bag and i go in the living room to see my jack Dempsey spinning in circles and hitting the tom and bottom of the tank then he calmed down and wedged his self in the corner. now he is out and is breathing really hard? whats gong on? the tank is a 240 and it has been up and running for a about a month or so and this is a adult fish that i have had in my dads tank. I have about 10 or so other cichlids in the tank

I have also noticed lately that the fish are rubbing in the sand every once in a while and have been doing this since i got the tank up and running pretty much but i didn't really know if it is a big deal or if the are just rearranging the sand and making beds.

There could be two things that can cause this one of which is known the other is a mystery that I havent gotten an answer to. The first is if all the fish display this action and "flashing" which is rubbing on the bottom or plants. Then you could have some chemical in the water like ammonia or chloramines. If you have a test kit check your parameters and see if any of your organic chemicals are up if so do a water change and see if conditions improve. If its only this fish and no others then I am still researching the cause of this. I have had my discus do this one fish would swim sporadically really fast and then just go in a corner and act normal. I had a total of 3 do this and 1 died but no others have displayed this behavior and all my readings were fine and I use RO/DI water so nothing is coming from the water.

I just called up tim and he was a bunch of help. after everything i described to him he seams to think it is just low oxygen in the water to I'm going to redeposition my outtakes of my filters towards the water line to create more disturbance and oxygenate the water a little more and hope fully this will help.

I'm with FF, I think the fish got spooked. But definitely let us know how it goes with more oxygen in the tank, and if that helps.

With the right kind of activated carbon and enough contact time, yes.

                              Yup
He could have knocked himself silly on the glass. I've had discus get spooked and kill themselves that way.
