  • Kilesa jumps to her death

This morning I topped off the tank with conditioned water as always, and while looking at the sump level, I noticed a sort of knocking sound. Kind of like when your fish get spooked sometimes and dart around hitting the glass. WTF! I said, and looked up to find one of my Kilesa females flopping about on the canopy glass top. Not able to pick her up(small and slippery), I just slid her across the glass to the open top next to it, and in she went. No more than 5-10 seconds max out of the water. She fell in the water, went right to the bottom, and lay upside down, trying several times to right herself while moving through the water. Within 2 minutes she was gone!

Could she have beaten herself to death from thrashing about on the tank top for such a brief time? Was there anything I should have/could have done to save her? It all happened so fast. Everyone one else was fine, no problems at all. Now the m/f count is 4 to 4. What a way to start off the day! So Sad.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks,
    Steve

I'm thinking you will find keeping fish full of both good and bad expereinces.....this is just one of the bad....unfortunately.....

Take from this life lesson what you need and let the rest go.....life goes on.

I was touched by your compassion for your Kilesa.

Are you sure it wasn't out of the water before and only started thrashing when you came up near the tank? It all depends on where the impact is if they get a head injury. I had a peacock jump out and land on his face. His whole face turned purple but he recovered. Sorry for your loss and good luck with the rest of them.

I would have to wonder the same thing. A few seconds out of water shouldn't be THAT traumatic.

My ex-wife was vacuuming once years ago and noticed something out of the corner of her eye. Turns out the vacuum freaked a convict and he managed tokump out through the very small opening at the back of the hood. He was probably boucning around on the carpet for a good minute. She dumped him back in and he was fine. Then again, it's hard to kill a convict.

On a somewhat unrelated note, a few months back I had a holding peacock jump out of a quarantine tank. I discovered it when I got home that evening, she was dried up and there were dried up fry all OVER the floor. Now that was nasty!

I am pretty sure she wasn't there before. I had just gotten up and turned the light on several minutes earlier. I filled the bucket and opened the top and poured it in. When I heard the flopping and saw her, she was on the center canopy glass(125 gal) in front of the light strip. I think she jumped out right when I was pouring the water in. Maybe it spooked her and caused her to jump.

I have had the occasional jumper when cleaning or even feeding in the past, but I always just picked them up and put them back in the tank and they were fine. Maybe the Kilesas are more sensitive?

I have no idea since I've never kept them. I think Armthehomeless has some. He might be able to tell you.

ANY fish can die like that if is hits itself a certain way. I haven't had any of my kilesas go like that . . . I found mine much later.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Do your kilesas get jumpy when the lights turn on/off?

Dorothy : How can you talk if you haven't got a brain?
Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

                  Tim,

Sometimes they do, and so do my Sibwesas! If the light goes out on the timer, it's not as often or as bad, but if I turn them out and then move in front of the tank, or move in front of the tank when the lights are off, it is worse.
