  • Erythromycin and Cyanobacteria

Okay, I know we've talked about this quite a few times on here before, but I'm looking to get a comprehensive summary of how some of you have treated cyano with erithromycin.

I am currently experiencing a really unattractive outbreak of this stuff in my tank with the killies and plants from Sheldon Lake. The package instructions say 4 doses, and I just added the last dose last night. I've followed the water change schedule and everything it recommends. The problem is, I'm not sure if the cyano is dying or not, what with the water changes and all, in which I removed some of it manually. The instructions also say that you can repeat the dosage process if needed.

So, I'm wondering what worked for everyone else? Did one round do the job? Was the cyano manually removed during the process? How long did it take?

    Thanks for any input.

    Re: Erythromycin and Cyanobacteria

From what I gathered you just dose the tank and let it do it's thing. Every time I had it I just threw a few amano shrimp in the tank and waited it out.

Try putting a small powerhead in the tank to increase circulation and try lower the temp of the tank so that it is a bit cooler.

Did the amanos really eat it? I didn't think anything did...

Thanks! I'll find an extra pump tonight. I have noticed that the cyano has decreased in the area of the filter output.

I actually have some cyano now in my puffer tank. Can anyone tell me if it's okay to dose erythromycin in a tank with puffers?

should be safe to dose, was looking around and alot of people have used erithromycin to treat their puffers for disease.

ps- this is the same thread i was thinking of , its just last time i saw it i noticed the date and didn't post....this time i wasn't as observant

I used UV sterilizer when I had cyno outbreak in my tank last time. They are all gone in 24 hours.

that has never worked for me....had a cyano outbreak in my SW tank and was running a uv filter before and after the breakout occurred. uv only treats the water that passes through it and kills free floating algae not all the stuff lying around in your tank.
