  • Tropheus with Dropsy survived - what I did

I just went in to feed one of the troph tanks, and saw that the tropheus I had been expecting not to survive, is back down to normal size and swimming with the colony again.

Just wanted to tell you guys what I did.

I noticed on the morning of July 16th (Saturday) that one of the trophs was swollen up like a pine cone and being picked on by the other trophs. I mixed up some Clout and some epson salt in a pitcher of clean dechlorinated water and added it to the tank. I used 1 tbsp of epson salt for every 10 gallons of water (give or take). Over the next couple of days I saw that the sick troph kept getting stuck between some rocks, so I would move the rocks to let him out. I finally arranged them so that he could get down in there and be on his belly instead of head down. He stayed there, for the most part, all the time. I guess since he was out of sight, the other trophs didn't feel it necessary to beat him down. On Tuesday, July 19th, I did a water change and cleaned the filter. I also started feeding Ken's Veggie Flake in addition to the Cichlid Excel Sinking Pellets, that I normally feed. On Thursday, July 21st, the sick troph started coming out to grab some flakes, but would go right back to his hiding spot. This morning, I couldn't find him in his spot in the rocks and was afraid he had died, but then saw him up in the colony begging for food with the rest of them. He is no longer swollen up, but I can see some damage on his sides. Not sure if it's from the previous swelling or from the other Trophs picking on him, but he looks totally fine other than that. And he seems to be accepted back into the colony as well.

Just wanted to share since I really didn't go to any extreme measures. Just one dose of meds and epson salt, one 75% water change, and added a veggie flake to the feeding regiment. 9 days later, things appear to be back to normal. If anything changes, I'll report back, but it's looking good now.
