  • What The...............snails

I went to clean the FX5 i have on a 135 and to my suprise..... There were little snails in there. How in the world did the get there? I have no signs of them in the tank. I do have a tank that i have some in for my Fahaka puffer but I have never had them in any of my other tanks. I clean that tank with a different python. Where did I go wrong?

What should I do? The tank has 14 Fronts in it with a couple of loaches and a BN. I rinsed the sponges out the best I could till I could not see anymore. I know I did not get them all out. I was thinking about placing a couple of AC 110's i have laying around, but if i do that.... Will they get'em too?

I could put the puffer in the tank but they are only in the filter. What to do???

    Thanks, FF

Do you see any snails around the tank? The clown loaches usually do a great job of eating 'em, which is probably why the snails took refuge in your filter.

Does it bother you that they're there? You probably got most out but you could slowly change out your filter sponges. You could stack on the AquaClears... I don't think you'll get snails in there if there are none visible in your tank.

Come to think of it... you could always use the FX5 simultaneously as a breeding ground for puffer food.

My guess is you have Malaysian Trumpet Snails(MTS). They seem to come from nowhere and multiply exponentially. They are often introduced innocently enough via the LFS. They can be transferred and introduced through a few grains of substrate, nets, filter media or any other means. They are difficult to get rid of as they multiply rapidly and can do so anywhere (filters included).

Once they have been introduced to the tank it is almost impossible to completely eradicate them. Your best bet at this time is to introduce assassin snails. 10-12 assassin snails should prevent them from infesting the tank and relegate them to life in the filter and perhaps a few stragglers in the substrate.

Good luck and move quickly before you have an infestation

+1 to Gene. Loaches typically won't touch MTS. There's currently an HFB member selling Assassin snails... specialone0812.

I've got so many assassins just give me a holla! I had so many mts at one time that I had to set traps now that's all in the past. Now I just have a mess of assassins.
