  • Cloudy Water

    Hello All,

I am a new member to the Box and am so glad I found you guys.  I have enjoyed viewing as a guest for a few weeks and have gained alot of helpful tips and guidance.  I have been in and out of the hobby since I was a teen and am recently working on my first planted tank. (If I new how addictive plant tanks can become I would have never started this project..lol)  I have had my tank running for about 4 months now which now includes:

    100Gallon Tank
    2217 Eheim
    260w compact (2 10k's & 2 6700's) Back of the tank
120w 50/50 Compac (front of tank)
    1 Emperor 400

    Plants:
    Narrow Leaf Chain Sword
    Bronze Wedtii
    Ammania Gracilis
    Limnophila aromatica
    Red Ludwigia
    Rotala indica
    Tiger Lotus

    Fish:
    2 otto Cats
    3 Botia sidthimunki

The main problem that I having is water clearity!  I have been unable to keep my water clear! (When i say clear, I am go for the crysal clean and clear affect)  The water seems to always be cloudy and have a yellish haze to it. I would appriciate any helpful tips about this current water condition. I do .25 weekly water changes.

Hmm...yellowish haze, eh? Do you have dirftwood in the tank? What type of substrate do you have? Driftwood can usually let out tannins into the tank which color the water a bit yellow.

They make a water polishing pad for Eheim 2217's I believe.  Does it look like particles floating around in the wate>?

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

I agree, the first thing that came to mind was driftwood. Then substrate, and sometimes what you're using in the filter. I think peat, for instance, can turn the water a bit yellowy.

If you could describe the cloudiness a bit more, it might help in isolating the cause.  :)

I tried Kent adsorption resin - works wonders.

Ek, says he uses Seachem Purigin which works wonders too.

This made my water CRYSTAL clear after about 2-3 days...
You put it in a baggie in the filter... let the water run over it and it pulls everything that is even remotely in your tank and bonds with it.
Later you regen the material and it will last longer.
