Have you figured out what the problem is with them?

I sent it off to some people here Geoff.
I'll let you know what they think.

So far the only thing from the exporter is to feed liquid food and treat with Furaltadone.

I have gotten some info from other people, that indicate a gram-negative bacterial infection caused by weakened condtion brought upon by ammonia toxicity, nitrite toxicity, and shipping stress.  Shipping stress being a result of starvation, bagging process, handeling process, acclimation process, and foul shipping watercondtions.

What I am going to do is filter tonight with charcoal to remove all the meds.

I am going to treat with Epson and Aquarium Salt.  I am going to stop all feedings, and then feed Aquarium Products Gel-Tek erythromycin, and treat the tank with Maracyn Two or some other high potentcy gram-negative effective medication.

I am also goign to do 50% waterchange and add another seeded bio-filter.

          Geoff,
          From one of my colleagues.

Well, it clearly is a microbial infection of the skin/integument in the urogenital pore region of the fish. Who knows if it is bacterial or viral? I've seen this before in captive fishes, but can't recall ever seeing it in wild fishes.

Follow up when I told him they were recently imported:

If they are rift lake fish (looks like a Tanganyika Tropheus or some such thing), then they were probably held in captivity at high densities for several weeks (too long) prior to export. The exporters usually lace the water with antibiotics to prevent infections, perhaps they didn't well enough in this case.

The exporter did say he had kept them for 7 weeks to collect enough Annectens.

Tetracylcin a good gram-negative med, that is absorbed thru the skin so those not eating will get medicated.

                What you think about that?

Remember, tetracycline is very short lived and doesn't like light.
Probably 8-10 hours and its gone, even faster at higher temps.
It is fairly water soluble and readily absorbed.
It couldn't hurt if you can get your hands on some.

True, but that was not said during the conversation on Sunday.

No more casualties or appearant symptoms since the second loss.  The group has been treated with Metronidazole for two days now.  It will be up to Jeff when I see him later today if he changes the course of treatment.

                              Beautiful fish...
