  • Fish eye problems please helpppp!

Hi everyone. I currently have two triggerfish (a niger and a picasso), and both have developed *different* eye problems and im stressing out about it.

Lets begin with the niger trigger:
I just checked his tank a few minutes ago and his right eye (which was fine this morning) is now protruding (in a pointy manner) with what seems to be blood! It is also clouded up. I don't think that this is popeye though because i have seen popeye before and my fish's eye is not round and bulgy it is POINTY and bulgy (caused by trauma?). The fish is not showing any immediate signs of impending death (he is still swimming around and breathing and eating) but Im concerned that the eye could develop an infection and then it would all be over... SUGGESTIONS PLEASE!!!!!

    The Picasso Trigger:
I have had this picasso trigger for well over 4 years now and he has been the most voracious healthy fish i have ever had. however, recently he has been swimming very sluggishly and i have noticed that both of his eyes appear cloudier than usual (triggerfish eyes have a general opaque-ness to them). He also does not charge the feeding end of the tank like he normally does when he sees me entering the room. When food is put into the tank (pellets or frozen or flakes) he responds by nibbling at the sand in search of "leftovers". To me, he is acting "blind" or at the very least "highly visually impaired". And I am aware that blindness can be induced by nutritional deficiencies but i don't think that that would be possible because i feed my fish only name brand food in many many different formats (even allowing an occasional treat of ghost shrimp) and have never allowed anything else. Any suggestions for this guy?

-----Now, I should openly admit that i have had the occasional struggle with nitrate levels. I would like to reduce my nitrate levels to zero for the betterment of these two fishes and their recoveries (pretty hard to do in a FOWLR tank of constantly pooping fish).... I am also open to suggestions on this.

Thank you for your help! I appreciate it! :)

The pointy eye might be some sort of parasitic infection the cloudy eye I would put on water conditions.

Try doing water changes with a healthy diet supplemented with garlic to help the immune and hope it works iteself out. Either that or aggression has played a role and caused them to inflict damage on themselves via bashing against rock or one another directly.

Hi - I recently had some fish eye problems of my own. One of 5 (small, new) freshwater angels developed popeye in one eye. I didn't have any water problems. I decided he had been accidentally injured with the net. Anyway, I treated everybody in the 55 gallon tank with marcyn for a week (don't have a quarantine tank yet, money and time). Eventually, in about two weeks, he got well, but appeared to have lost his eye. I had a weird mix of fish, most of which I bought all at one time from a girl who just bought whatever she liked without worrying about fish compatibility - including a black ghost knife and neon/black stripe tetras. While the angel was getting well, the other angels grew exponentially. I ended up getting another 25 gallon high tank (Thank You Barrettsline) to house my at risk fish. Now all is well. Anyway - I thought my angel ahd lost his eye, but today it's lookin' like there's an eye in there - just kinda small. Am I crazy? Are there some kind of vitamins I can put in the tank to make it better? Any idea on what's going on?
