Re: cardinal disease - never ending drama

So are you guys saying you make your own HOB filters using foam and the media? I have thought about this. Seems like I could save some $$$.

    Thanks

There are tons of things you can use instead of the expensive filter cartridges...I think they even offer a clamshell that you can replace your existing cartridge with and it allows for tailoring of the media.

sintered glass or ceramic rings/balls/etc is just bio-media....stuff that is porous so that beneficial bacteria can attach to.

thanks for all the tips guys, its been a hectic day, but i did get some fluval biomax stuff and i just dumped it in the filter cartridge area, and put the fluval foam i bought on top of it, once these are in the tank for a few days, i will remove my cartridge and put the foam in and put all the biomax stuff on top, i used about half of the biomax, the remainder back in the box, hope these things don't go bad!

on another note, saw "balls of fury" - it is a funny movie

Re: cardinal disease - never ending drama

i would like to say it is fin rot, and it started in only the new cardinals i got recently from fishgallery, i have lost 2 of them the day before, but the rest are doing ok so far

my glowlights do have slight white tips, but they have had them for a while now and it looks nice on them

i do have a question, as you guys know i am dosing melafix and pimafix (both of them say for 7 days and that is my plan), however they say change 25% water after 7 days, my question is, should i change water before then, i feel like i should make a ~15% change now because most articles i read says make water changes if there is disease, what should i do?

You can do either....also make sure there is plenty of aeration/circulation cause the meds deplete oxygen

Re: cardinal disease - never ending drama

it looks like the three cardinals with fin rot thing have less of the white edge on their fins

i hope its a good sign and they are going in the right direction

i did a 15% water change today and will keep the medication at suggested level for seven days

lets hope this stays under control and goes away!
