      Re: need help - ich

well, i used rid-ick one day and then decided to do natural cure, so raised the temp to 82 now and added salt, nothing looks too out of place, i think i still a spot or two on some fish - but not completely visible, but i noticed today that the tetras are all breathing heavier and also staying more towards the top of the tank or going back towards the top whenever they can, water is fine (tested), they are all eating, but i can tell they are not comfortable, they usually don't breathe this hard and don't go towards the top of the tank unless food is given, i will go get an airstone or two to see if that helps, is there anything else i need/can do?  please help

fyi - when i decided to do the natural treatment, i put back the carbon filter media for 3 hours to remove any meds, and then removed the carbon and included salt

          Re: need help - ich

Here is a link to an older thread concerning Ick.

HoustonFishBox is an online community dedicated to bringing together people and their fish in Houston, Southeast Texas, and beyond.

Also, here is a quote from Scott in that thread that I consider standard treatment against Ick.

<Qoute"Get yourself some Ich-Guard, use it at 50% dosage in the community tank for at least a week to ensure that you aren't hosting any ich that hitched in on the wilds. In the QT tank dose at 150% for at least a week. Do a 20% change in each of the tanks every 2 days to ensure that the oxygen levels stay up and to remove any ich parasites which the meds have killed off. Turn the heat up in both tanks to between 82-84 to increase the hatch rate on the parasite, ich is only suceptable to meds when in its free swimming state, so getting the ich to cycle faster increases your chances of getting it all. The life cycle for ich in 76 degree water can be as much as 10 days, whereas by raising the temp to 84 the cycle is reduced to as little as 3 days. With ich its important to remember that if you can see it, you can't kill it, as at this point it is not suceptable to the meds, its not until the little pustules on your fish hatch out and the ich becomes free swimming and is in search of a host that it is vulnerable to the meds. Continue the treatment after all visible signs are gone for at least 4 days, this ensures that you kill off all the free swimmers." Unquote>

thanks raul, i guess since i am not using a med. and just salt, the only thing to do now is change water and will put the air stone in and see if that helps

              Re: need help - ich

I think changing the water's a good idea. Activated carbon, from what I hear, gets saturated pretty quickly, so it might not have done much if you added the used carbon for those couple of hours. But, that's just what I've heard, so take it with a grain of salt. (No pun intended)
