  • 125 gallon Ick

My 125 gallon tank has ick, sigh! At first it was my 8" Severum he got sick and died during treatment. Then about 2 weeks ago my 3" Severum got Ick, he is now healthy but was not added to tank. Today my Female 7" Green severum has signs of Ick also. What I did was quarantined her into a tank added meds and turned heat to 85 degrees. My main tank I turned off 2 of my filters and left the xp4 running with bubbles running. I turned the heat to 85 degrees also. I will do 25% water changes every day for at least 6 days while adding the meds every day. At the end of the week i will do a 50% -75% water change and clean all 3 filters. That is if at the end of 6 days the fish look better. Can you please help me out and tell me what I can do or what I am doing wrong. Very thankful for the help.

            I have not tried Salt.

Thanks for the links, I will be checking them out now.

I have not had ick in about 10 years.

It was my mistake, i added a fish to my tank without putting it in my quarantine tank first as I usually do.

I have 1 question. When using the Salt method do I leave the filters running?

Use Epsom salt. About 1 cup per 100 gallons and heat to about 82 for about a week. Keep using the salt and yes keep your filters going. If you have an air stone and an air pump use that also.

I added about 15 table spoons of Sea Salt and turned heaters up to 85F. Ill Do 25% water change every day as well as add another 15 table spoons for about 3 days then I will turn heat down for 3 days and not add salt. Then the next 3 days turn heat up and do same process as start. 10th day I will do 50% water change. I will see how fish are doing and if they are fine I will do about 30% water change every other day for about a week or so until i have the water lvls back to normal.

Something not mentioned yet, when u treat with meds for ich you should remove ur carbon from the running filters. It counteracts the meds. Rid ich + salts + water changes should do the trick. Best of luck to u and loosing any fish is never good! Sry for ur losses, fight it hard tho

Make sure you have lots of air.

Increase in heat effects the oxygen in the water in two ways.
                              1) Oxygen is lower in warmer water.
                              2) Warmer water increases the fishes demand for oxygen.

Make sure you don't suffocate them by adding air stones or more surface agitation. If the fish are swimming to the top and staying there then they are most likely gasping for air.
