Hey guys, thanks for all the encouragement and advice. I haven't responded because I've just been trying to get over the horror of coming home and finding nearly all my fish dead. The silver dollars are slowly dying off probably of gill damage but the plecos and corys, oddly enough, seem to be okay... except for my favorite, the flash pleco, that died right off the bat.

Thanks for all your generous offers on the fish. Quoc, I may still take you up on the altifrons if they're still around by the time my total shock wears off... I just haven't decided anything yet.

Bee it happens. I was running a carbon snake and wiped out over half of a 50+ fish colony of Cyprichromis. After the bloodbath was over I tested my water and found 4 PPM ammonia straight from the tap and about half that after the carbon snake.

I took it hard as well. I couldn't shake the feeling that I was responsible. Honestly though how many people test the tap before every water change? No need to get discouraged this one is on your water company. How can you be responsible for those clowns running wild playing mad scientist and screwing up your parameters?

It's for this reason that I use prime and sodium thiosulfate in my tank... and it's still a crapshoot without pretreating the water in a storage tank and testing before using. Unfortunately, our public water supplies are so polluted coming into the treatment plants that they have to all-but-nuke the water to make it potable.

As do I. No matter how bad it is, if I heavily dose Prime at up to 5 times the usual dose, I have no problems whatsoever. This time was different I guess. :(

Haven't had something this disastrous happen since I was 9 years old and I lost 30 angels and other community fish to ich and a heater malfunction.

I wonder if the chloramines did something to your purigen besides killing your poor fish.

purigen should be fine since it can handle being soaked in clorox. so sorry to hear about the loss, it does happen to the best of us sometimes. a couple months ago i lost 10 angels that were big and seemingly healthy - overnight. now i have discus! let this be a stepping stone, a new beginning for you. now you have a new tank to restock. i still have lots of geo fry if you would like...

Thanks so much. I'm still a little shell shocked. I have 5 silver dollars, 6 sterbai corys, and 2 L-144 plecos that survived...so far. They look so skittish in there. Can barely go into the living room myself at this point!
