  • Shrmp/Snail friendly Ick treatment?

AHHHH I noticed ick on a few of my neon tetras and my male apisto!!!! WTF they've been fine this whole time until today. I read the sticky, but am still unclear of what is safe for shrimp/snails! Please advise I really don't want to lose my apisto! Or my shrimp. Is the heat/salt method safe for the plants and shrimp? Please advise. I'm freakin out. Thanks in advance

There's stuff called Ick Attack that is supposed to be shrimp and snail friendly. It's organic. I've used it, and it works. I haven't used it in a tank with shrimp, but the snails survived.

Is it something I can pick up at like a petco or petsmart? I don't understand what caused the outbreak. Maybe too much light? Been trying to get my plants to grow out some.

Yes, both Petsmart and Petco carry it. http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...uctId=11066250

Too much light wouldn't cause an ich outbreak. Usually it's carried in on something. Add any new plants or fish lately?

          Like 2 weeks ago maybe?

Hmmm...seems like it would have presented sooner then this. I've read that ich is always present in tanks, and that stress allows it to overtake fish, but I'll be honest, I'm not so sure about that. Seems like we'd see it occurring far more often than it does. Either way, the sooner you start treating the tank, the better chance of saving your fish.

Luckily I work 5 miles from home so I'll pick some up and begin tomorrow at lunch. Thanks for the help.

Turn the lights off during the treatment cycle.

Should I continue regular feeding or no?

Ok, just gave the tank a dose of the ich attack. Everybody seems to be swimming ok, did notice my male apisto scraping himself on the driftwood though :/

I have the light off, water temp is about 80. Too hot? Not hot enough? Should I continue normal feeding? Any more advice? Thanks.

Keep the temp up, the medication only kills them in the free swimming phase. High temps speed up their cycle and will lessen the time they are effected. Be sure and remove any carbon in your filtration as it absorbs the medication. The apistos 'flashing' on the driftwood is a common occurence with parasites on the skin, they'll eventually stop once the parasites are no longer bothering them.

Ok good. No carbon in my eheim. Is 80 high enough or should I raise the temp more?

I'd say it was high enough. I'd be worried about the plants and shrimp any higher

My male apisto wasn't looking so good this morning. Im afraid to look in the tank when I get home. He was barely able to keep himself upright He looks ragged as hell. I'm super disappointed. The spots are starting to dissapear some but I don't think he'll make it. This sucks. I've only had ick like one or two other times ever and never really lost any fish to it.
