  • unexplained illness. with pics!

ok, so here goes. yesterday, everything was fine. tonight i got home to find a very interesting outbreak of something... no clue what it is. looks fungal? maybe bacterial?

it's a 75g tank, been running for years, no live plants, 2 cascade canister filters each rated for 100g. this tank is really just a homeless shelter where i house large fish that have either been brought to my house or brought up to a store i was working at in a bucket. no live plants, no substrate, just a couple pieces of driftwood and a couple ugly cave-type decorations i got for free.

    stock list-
    2 large oscars
    1 14in RTC
    1 12in albino channel cat
    1 8-9in red parrot
    1 5in jaguar cichlid
    about a dozen convicts black/pink
    5 5in silver dollars
    1 8in featherfin syno
    4 12in senegal bichirs
1 10in australian yabbie (giant crayfish)

regular water changes and overfiltration have always worked wonders for this obviously overstocked tank.. along with light feedings, i've been able to keep the weird group of misfit fishes happy, until now. nothing has changed in my routine. no new fish, plants, or decor. no different foods. nothing at all i can think of that could cause this. temp holding at 78 degrees, ammonia/nitrite both zero, nitrate at just under 10, according to API test tube kits. i checked, and the kits aren't expired or anything.

did about a 75% water change, dosed with jungle "binox", which claims to treat both bacterial and fungal infections. pulled the yabbie, just in case he's sensitive to the meds, he's now in a tank by himself. within about 15 minutes, most of the fish perked up visibly. all the fish seem to be affected to some degree, and this literally came about in less than 24 hours. the tiger oscar has a scratch on his/her face that is also new, i can only assume the yabbie got it, or it hit a piece of driftwood. this has never happened before. any ideas as to what might have caused this? i'm at a loss.

    my fish house:
    2.5g- ramshorn hatchery
6g eclipse- yellow shrimp, chili rasboras, yellow apple snails
29g- geo grow-out, angels, 12"fire eel, dwarf frog, apple snails
45g- jade sleeper gobies, native killifish, feeder endlers

    75g-
2 oscars, parrot, silver dollars, albino channel cat, syno euptera, bichir, baby jaguar, convicts, yabby
    125g- fahaka puffer, rainbow shark
    and about a dozen bettas....

Wish I were better about fishie ailments, I have no idea what you've got going on there. How long has the giant cray been in there?

Hopefully the meds knock all this back! Good luck, hon.

it was this female pink convict covered in some kind of fuzzy white stuff, as all my other babies were.

sunny you are very much right.. i've never used binox before, but holy carp that stuff kicks bass! that is what is giving the water that funny color, it's a yellow powder, and i only used 2/3 the recommended dose! now if only i knew what was wrong in the first place...

                      Re: unexplained illness. with pics!

Lol, he's a single serving size crawfish! Nice.

BTW, Binox is no longer available. I now use bulk Nitrofurazone (the active ingredient in Binox) or Bifuran (80% Nitrofurazone, 20% Furazolidone) for even broader spectrum coverage. Pretty sure HAW can order these.

Right on. I couldn't remember if he was in there or not when I saw the tank but I figured that's because I'm forgetful...lol

Seriously cool critter. But yeah, doesn't look like he plays nice! We had an extra feeder mudbug in Suki's old tank while we were waiting for her to settle in, seeing him tooling around in there like a king has me really debating some of those self-cloning type. Having a tank full of this could be fun...

But anyway, sorry to derail. Maybe it is just an injury/bacterial chain reaction. looks like you're getting it under control, good call on getting those meds in so fast...

Maybe that yabbie has toxic saliva like a komodo dragon and he went on a spree while you were gone, nipping at everything in sight. No? Obviously I'm reaching here
