  • Help with my yellow lab

    Hi everyone

I just noticed one of my four yellow lab was hidden behind the power filter on top of the heater almost at water surface. So I saw something like red in his head, I took some pic even was hard to get one neat

I have a 90 gal tank with African cichlids about 20 of them, sizes from 2" to 4", with a canister and power filters.

I'd appreciate your help and advices about it

    Thanks

What are your water parameters? My initial guess would be high Nitrates, I'd recommend consistent water changes (75% WC every 2-3 days) and dosing melafix or pimafix. Determine your WC schedule based upon lower Nitrate readings. Gravel vac that substrate well, it can become a nitrate sink.

Thanks I'll do it what you wrote makes sense, something I forgot to mention was I left my tank with automatic feeders for a week due to I had to attend some personal stuff, and I just got back the last weekend, so I already cleaned the filters (canister and power).

I appreciate your time and comments.

I would certainly think that would do it. The water looked low and a bit tannin stained (from the driftwood, Purigen in your canister will clear that if you prefer) so that's where I would start. Watch it and if it continues to worsen, then an isolation tank might be easier. In a 10 gallon its easier to keep water parameters good and treat with medicine (antibiotics/melafix/pimafix) and far cheaper in the long run then treating a very large tank. Once the parameters get back in line I think it will bounce back, Malawi's are good about that.
