I got some free pleco's super red, calico and some blue eyes which I brought home and put in a quarantine tank which I'd had running for a bit. One died on the way home but I didn't see anything wrong with it. The next day, 2 more were dead, and they sort of had bumps the color of their skin on them. I noticed the other plecos had the same bumps but I couldn't tell and they were all over so it looked like it was normal for them. Since the plecs died and I couldn't tell anything was obvious wrong, I thought it was aggression and moved some plecs to other tanks.
It was in the other tank where the light was better I was able to see that the plec had 2 of these dots on it's eye as well as all over it's body. The dots are the size of ich or larger, but yellowish/orangeish in color. The closest thing I've found that looks like it is velvet. I've gotten some API general cure and treated the quarantine tank. I've moved the plec back in, one plec died and the third I can't find in the tank I thought I put it in. I've turned of the lights to those tanks and I'm watching the other fish to see if anyone develops it. I've also put salt in all the tanks.
One thing I'm wondering is the nets, containers and water changing stuff; can I bleach those? Will bleach kill velvet? I'm considering just killing everything in the tanks and bleaching the tanks but I wasn't sure if bleach will kill velvet.
any other suggestions or thoughts on treating this parasite are welcome. I'm going to try and get some pictures of it to post here.
thanks!
