  • Do we prefer a hob filter or a canister?

    • I like canister because it is quiet, but the hob has advantage of agitating the water surface. People usually use them in conjunction.

its all personal preference really. i only use HOBs right now, but agree canisters are more quiet. I used canisters on my 75g for about a year before they broke down (were old and just given to me). you have to tend to the HOBs more often. the carbon pads get dirty faster causing them to backwash. with a canister, it was maybe once every 4-6 weeks i would actually open and clean them out. much more hands free and allows for better bacteria growth.

i have my plan. i want to add canisters to my 75g since it only uses two whisper 60 HOBs currently. will be one canister for each side of the tank. fill both with half bio media and half mechanical (like sheet batting or something from walmart). then i can shift one of the HOBs into my 56g, so it will have two HOBs instead of one. and keep one HOB still in the 75g so it has three filters. (and can add more fish) :)

        its a slow shift

        • HOB canister is more affordable and easier to clean. I usually clean HOB once a month depend on feeding.

Canister cost more upfront but it can house more bacteria, and you don't have to clean them as often. I clean them every 3 months.

Canisters are quiet and have more space for media. I use Wet/Dry Sump filters. They are noisy, big, and scary. But they do oxygenate better. They have 4 times the media space and work great.

                  • If they are set up right they will never flood.

                        • Well... I hope you're happy! I just dropped some more money to get a second filter. I went with the Aquaclear 110 (to go along with my 50). We'll see how it works next week and if it starts to clear everything up.

Oh you will love it. Give it a week or two. Take some old media from the old filter to help it cycle faster.

                              • That makes sense. I was feeding 3-4x a day but have cut back to 2x. I worry about the babies being hungry.
