  • Freaking Disaster from way-back

    Holly Crap
I was doing a water change like so many that I have done in the past all the suden the fish start looking weird. Floating around slugishly down at the bottom gasping for air. I Test the water five times in both tanks. Mind you this is a 80 Gal tank and i have just changed only 25% of the water. So Im freakin-out as the fish start convulsing and floating on there sides some are at the top and some at the bottom. I test the water in both tanks 3 times each and all levels are just fine.Temp is great I don't understand.  Finnaly I just start adding stress coat to the water of one tank about 5Min later the tank starts improoving.
Guess what? The city tap water has Amonia   !!!!! I have used this water many times and never detected any anonia problems. Today Its got a ton of Amoinia. Half my fish are dead. I'm pissed. :aua:

As Alex Jones would say, fish can't live in it, yet we're supposed to drink it...???

I too, am sorry about your loss.

              Welcome....

What I want to know is how did you test several times and not detect it? What kit are you using? How old is it? What de-chlorinators do you use other then the stress coat?

I Usually test the tap water monthly and like delock stated....I test after the rain before I do a water test.

I dont normally test the tap water before I do a water change... or even monthly or anything...

Also I only use Stress Coat as well... what would be the advantage of using more then one?

                  Sorry to hear.
I always let my water aerate with prime for at least 24hrs before a water change.

What a bummer! Sorry for your loss.
My water in Beaumont is always between a .50-2.0 ammonia. I don't think I ever tested it when there was 0 ammonia. I always use prime for every water change. And I always use a dose for the entire tank. Knock on wood but I have not lost a fish due to the amm. spikes in my tap. I also do 50% water changes on all my tanks each week and sometimes twice a week. IMO prime is better than stress coat. It also last longer.

Normally no advantage using more then one....just ditch the stress coat stuff for something like Seachem Prime or Kordon's Amquel+plus

I agree with storing the water for 24 hours 1st.

I have also seen high nitrite levels in COH tap water... I have have used Zip and then let the water aereate for 4hrs min and then test for NH[sub:498eccc854]3[/sub:498eccc854] and NO[sub:498eccc854]2[/sub:498eccc854].... also ammonium (NH[sub:498eccc854]4[/sub:498eccc854]) is less toxic than ammonia (NH[sub]3) so in a pinch you can lower the pH to lower the toxicity..... this has serious issues as well.....

One of the Peakocks that survived seems to be Gasping, All the others look just fine. I guess we will see if it makes it?
I cant belive that after four years doing water changes Iv'e just been lucky.
Never knew that Tap water had so much Amonia in it.
From now on I will treat the water before adding Tap.
