Since I am on a well, I am lucky enough to have pretty good water.  I do know that the neighbor's well is HORRID.
The other day in PETSMART I stood and spoke with a woman and her kids about cycling their new tank and not over populating before it is set up.  I also gave her this website (I hope she checks it out).
As for the copper from the pipes/hot water tank... I would think that you could run the hot water for a while... put a bucket, catch a bit, then do a copper test on it *shrugs* During the winter I always add from my hotwater tank.  This past winter I have very few fatalities.  I have had more since summer hit.  The water around this city is NUTS.  I do know a city water inspector that says it depends on the area inspector... they have specs they are supposed to follow... but... there are a bunch of lazy.. um.. butts out there.
