Re: Vitamin C....Not just for you but now for your fishies!

Well, I have a beautiful spawn of bettas, and all my livebearer tanks have had an explosiion of fry.  My planted tanks need to be thinned.  Of the tanks that I have used it in, not a single one lost fish during the power outage.  And I have not had any outbreaks of disease in my fishroom.   I can say that I have not noticed any negative effects and am continueing to use it.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

That's great news. I haven't started to use it in my planted tank yet but I might. Right now I'm still using it in my saltwater tank. During the blackout I didn't use it. Of course my nitrates went from 0-40 but I was only running the wet/dry in the evenings on the generator. That probally had alot to do with my nitrate spike. Once the lights came back on I started using it again. I'll be checking my water again tonight but they seemed to have settled between 10-20 with weekly 50% water changes.

I have been using it in my Tropheus tank and they are still healthy, only thing I would say that differ is that I have a lot more females holding right now at one time but that could be cause they are getting older.

So how has this been affecting the PH guys how often are you having to add buffer? right now i'm only having to buffer on water changes. do you have to rebuffer every time you add the C?

The vitamin c is buffered to a pH of 7.1 so the minimal amount needed does not affect the water pH much.

My tap comes out pretty decent and with the aragonite substrate keeps the pH from crashing.

pH is only part of the equation.

buffer, buffer  I don't need no stinkin buffer

Most everything I keep is rainforest fishes and they like low pH
Checked my planted endlers tank with my new pH probe and it read 4.0

you say the minimal but when i was reading some of the links people were talking about using alot more than the minimum . only starting low and gradually working your way up . i'm not sure how long you have been doing the C doses but are you still only using the minimum?

I slowly increased it but do not get to the point where some do when using it to lower nitrates... I use the vitC as a supplement and not a carbon source in some of the reef threads.

ok EK thanks and make sure to keep everyone posted on the progress.

and yes phishphreak if we all kept those type of fishes there would be no need to raise the ph. but dang 4.0 thats low!!!
