  • fin defects?

i,ve got about 35 petro trew fry. i,m starting to notice defects in the dorsal fin about 2/3 down. at least 3 or 4 fish. seems like every day new defects. could it be bad genes. or i have heard people say filtering your water thru carbon causes problems? is it diet. theres  40 moop fry in this 210 with no problems. any ideas.

the fin looks like it did't grow as much on about 5 or 6 of the rays. there is a whitish color on the tips.

Hmmm...I have one Troph fry with the same defect.  I just chalked it up to aggression, but now that you are seeing that same thing I think I need to start researching....I'll let you know if I find anything.

I don't think it's too many w/c.  I think the cleaner the water, the better.

There was a post in the Troph and Petro forum recently that discussed Wild Caught vs. Pond Raised...maybe there's some good info there....

If they have white tips I would think it's due to aggression?

I'm doing 70% water changes and just recently I have been toying with 90-100% water changes......Got about 3 batches of fry just spit and havent' noticed any defects like you are witnessing John, also using the carbon bottle.

These are the ones on the Puppy Chow/NLS mix right?

yea the mix. i guess it could be aggression. if it is then as they grow maybe this will go away? i'll try to get a pic to post.

Depending on how bad it is it should grow back out fairly quickly....if it's severe then it might stay a defect.

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

                      Re: fin defects?

A couple of the dorsal fins look like they have been seperated. (see first picture) In this picture, the front half of the dorsal is pressed against the body, but the second half is not.  Personally, I think it is from aggression due to the fact that several other fish have nipped fins (second picture). I don't think the fins from the first fish will ever fuse together.
