    algae problem in flowerhorn tank

    My flowerhorn is in a 90 gallon tank by himself and he is pretty aggressive.  The tank is in the foyer so no outside light shines on it, it has been set up since May with argonite and one holey rock.  I am having a major algae problem!  With the fh being so aggressive I am afraid to put a pleco in there with him, and he might eat the nerrite snails.  The lights are on for 10 hours a day but even when I had the lights on for only 7 hours I still had an algae problem.  There is green algae and on the holey rock there are some long brown/dark purple looking algae...looks like hair swaying back and forth...pretty gross looking  8O   The tank gets 50% water changes a week since there is only one fish in there.  

    Filteration is 1 eheim 2217, 1 eheim 2215, and a 350 powerhead.  

    any suggestions?  normally in our other tanks we do not have any algae thanks to our hardworking plecos!

        How much do you feed him?

          Sounds like brush or beard algae if you say it's black/purple....

          Might just have to go and do it manually or try leaving the lights out for 3 days along with less feeding and lower temps.

            Okie.. so what I would do is look around and see if there are anyone who is selling like a 8-10" pleco... one that the FH will have a little bit harder time with killing off.

              If it wanted to it will kill any size pleco...

              When I was raising asian arowana's no matter what the size they would kill them... a flowerhorn's temperament surpasses an arowana by far! Also IME plecos do little to nothing for beard algae or any algae other then diatoms. Then there's the problem of adding that large of a bio-load.... most algae problems are a nutrient fueled and adding a large pleco is only gonna aid that if it can't carry it's weight.

                what's causing the beard algae though?  I've never had a problem until about 2 weeks ago, we've always had brown or green algae but never this nasty hair algae!  

                the fh gets hikari, grand sumo, and fast color pellets along with fresh shrimp and frozen bloodworms.  he eats everything right away so there's never food left in the tank.  we do scrub the tank when we do water changes but it comes back within a couple of days.  I don't really want to put a large pleco in there because 1) large plecos scare me 2) it will make the tank ugly!  

                I guess I don't leave myself with many options besides scrubbing it more!

                Ek, what kind of asian arowanas did you have?

                  Try rinsing the raw/live foods and draining on a paper towel before feeding.

                  Also a lot of those "color" foods pack a lot of nutrients that will fuel algae.


                  As for arowanas...
                  I raised 14 asians... purple, few green RTG's, and the last was a 2ft. RTG.

                  Now if someone was to dangle a nice super red, chillir red or xback this colony of Ilangis will go bye bye....

                    no kidding, I want a super red or rtg arowana.  Its stupid that Canada will allow it but the United States won't.  they come from farms anyways and doesn't affect the wild supply.

                    I'm going to try to scrub the tank really well and do a water change. I know a lot of people keep their fhs in glass bottom tanks but I just think that looks too bare.  My biggest concern is, is the algae affecting the health of the fish?

                      Yeah it is pretty lame...


                      Only thing I see being a problem is the release of spores and stuff when scrubbing but just siphon while you scrub.

                      Other thing is if its really taken over after a long photo period it will give off co2 at night.
