Building a stand isn't all that hard. Just cut right and pre-drill the holes before putting the screws in. :)
Fish are people too, they just have gills.

I used to know a website that had a stand plan generator... you put in the dimensions of the tank, and how high you want the stand and it would tel you exactly what wood you needed and how long for each piece... even included the measurements for Trim and all that.

        a ha! found it! http://www.fishandtips.com/index.php

Last stand I built was based off of these DIY instructions

Build the stand so that you can fit a second(quarantine) tank below it.
It just so happens that I can fit a ~20L tank on the bottom of the stand I made for my 55 gal. It was completely unintentional. In hindsight, building it just a little taller 2-4 inches would give me more clearance below.

thats a nice link...im guessing the guy who posted that is a civil engineer cuz i was looking for the same info he posted...about the mechanical properties of wood....niceee

There is a website that has the properties of wood on it air dried or kiln dried (this would be a 2x4) look for this rather than properties of a 2x4. The other problem there are about a half a dozen species of wood that are used for 2x4's. From the dimentions you gave 2x4's are plenty strong. The screws are more likely a failure point if you go with what most people use. 1. Don't use drwall screws, use wood screws, drywall screws are brittlle and likely to break. 2. drill a pilot hole, as fishboy said, there are charts available to give you the proper size. 3. Use coarse threaded screws on soft woods and fine thread screws for hard woods. This is not the classifcation of hard and soft woods but physically whether a wood is hard or soft eg. poplar is soft by it's physical properties but is classifed as a hard wood, use coarse threaded screws in it. 4 make the top of the leg joints so that the leg supports the weight not the screws. 5. do not put anything below the tank that you do not mind getting wet. at some time during tank maintance or a tank failture it is going to happen.

I think this is what you are looking for, beware it is kind of techincal.
