what works more efficiently, the corner overflow box or just a hole on the back at the desired water level?

      Drill the bottom !!!!
You can always later install a nice overflow box around it to hide the pipes if you want. A side drilled tank. Once done. Cannot be undone to look normal again. With a bottom drain you can insert a plug in the bulkhead and then cover it up with substrate or rock work.

yea that makes sense but i want what will pull more water out faster. looks is not a factor. none of my tanks are show quality.

so does the overflow box work just the same as just drilling the back of the tank with no box?

Fastest flow again is going to be bottom.
The only reason you use side is for skimming.
Bottom will give you the fastest flow, and most options. You really dont want to go any other way.

Please check to see which way to drill. I believe the correct way is to drill from the INSIDE of the tank. Incase you have any glass chips.. they are all going to be on the OUTSIDE of the tank as you push through the bit.
