You are on to something; If you make it 12 ft diameter, put 50 tons of (special) sand in it , heat it to 1200F , fill it with oil (will have to adjust flow to get fluidized or ebulating bed) - you will have a cat cracker (well, part of one) and can make your own gasoline.
