Whats the best way to paint or color the 1980s wood color trim on tanks to black like all my other tanks are?Doesnt have to be painted on the glass side just the outside trim. Most tanks that i find and are cheap have that ugly fake brown woodgrain on them that kinda reminds me of mobile home paneling from the 80s

Depending on the age of the tank, sometime with older tanks they used a paint and then a sealant on top of that.. if its old you will notice its pealing. you will need to tape it off and carefully sand the trim to get the sealer off, use very fine sand paper to get the sealant off... remember only if you see the sealant already pealing do you do this... If its newer, then just do as suggested and paint right on top of it as an already water resistant paint was used. Tape off the tank and use news papers to cover all the glass.. I hate it when a drop or something else hits the glass and you have to get that off later..

You could try vinyl dye from the auto parts stores. It works pretty well on plastic, or at least plastic computer parts which is what I used it for. Its like spray paint though so still pretty noxious.
