No way I'd do an EC conversion without reinforcing things very well, even if the EC was solid wood.
Lilmissruffcountry is correct. I have lots of very nice glass that I collect from shelving, etc. I just now used a piece to make a nice lid for my cube. 1/4" glass and the local glass shop did the one cut it needed for free, even buffed up the edges nicely. Can't beat free X2.
And acrylic scraps can also be had for free/very cheap.
