Help on aquarium rim take off

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with taking off the black, plastic rims that come with the standard 10 gallon (or however much) tank you buy from petsmart. I want to remove the black part so it is more "rimless" but I don't know if it's possible.

It has been done by some before, but I believe your taking a chance when you do that....

You're better off just paying the extra bucks and buying the rimless tanks already available....I believe ADG is one outfit that makes them.

To remove the trim, use a hair dryer to soften the silicone....

also i have read that sometimes the edge of the glass is not so nice when you remove rims.

I think I'll stick to leaving it on then haha I thought it would be an easy task to do it but I guess not.

I have had some plastic trim just lift off; I have had another that I broke the glass before I got the trim off.
You can "break" the shap glass corner easily with a grinding stone. But it is much more problem if you want to change the appearence of the cut face.

I have only taken off the front trim of a 20g tank and and it didn't just "lift off". It had to come off in peices. If I wanted to take off all the trim I guess I would add more silicone inside the tank.

Buy an ADA tank and they do it for you....

I have a friend that removed the top and bottom trim off his 10g. Been filled with water for 10 months and still all good. I say if you're on a budget just go for it.

Use a hair dryer. It takes time but, it will work. Just work on one side at a time.

I wanna try this too on my 5.5g but it is already filled with plants but no fish just cheapo snails do you think I can do it with a hairdryer?

Get a hookbill knife and a heat gun. The trim will come right off.

Have some fine grit emery cloth ready. Sometimes the glass under the trim may be sharp (but most of the time just ugly).
Use emery cloth to the to take the edge of it (so to speak).
