  • host question...

so i got a pump that is has a return of 1"...so i want to reduce it down so i can use a 3/8" hose...what is the easiest way to do it? do they sell a adapter or something??

Is the 1" return molded into the pump?

Go to Lowe's or Home Depot's plumbing department. Your looking for hose barb fittings. You typically can find plastic ones that are dual barbs whereas one end is 1" and the other is 3/8". I use the 5/8 to 1 all the time so I'm assuming that 1/2 to 3/8 is there.

Come off the pump 4" to 6" inches with the 1" tubing and cut the tubing in half. Place the hose barb into the tubing and clamp it off using an adjustable hose clamp. Repeat the process on the 3/8" end and you will be in business.

If the plastic isn't available you can make one out of brass (clean it good) using 1" and 3/8" barbs with a reducer fitting. If going this route use teflon tape on all connection threads. Don't forget the clamps.

After you clamp the tubing to the hose barb give the tubing time to mold itself to the barb before introducing flow.

What pump you have ? Going down to a 3/8 hose you are about to potentially ruin the pump. There is going to be a lot of back pressure in the line. Any chance of changing the hose to something bigger ?

i have two pump on hand right now...which i going to end up selling one...and keep one myself...
the pump is going to use for water change..because my python does the job too slow..
well one pump is rio 2100 and the other one is aquaclear 110...rio around 700gph, the AC around 1000...
rio has a smaller return...but still does not fit the python hose...AC is around 1 in...
the reason i want to reduce it down is to use the host of the python...so i dont have to spend money on another 50 feet or so hoses...
do you think it would hurt the pump in the long run? i only run it around once a week...to do the water change...
should i just keep the smaller pump then?
