With my puffer tank sitting the way it is i want to run the canister filter tubing up one end rahter than the usual back side. I'm not sure if the stand is sturdy enough to take 2 half inch holes being cut in it. Any suggestions on how safe it would be.

When in doubt, reinforce it.
attach a 1 by 4 with carpenters glue and screws then drill through both'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

If those are individual panels I would drill it so that the hole is centered between two panels so that each panel only has half a hole of course you would have to spread the holes between four panels.
Or do what PP stated reinforce the panel/stand from behind and drill it.700g Mini-Monster tank

I've drilled out stands and never had problems. Because the boards are holding weight vertically, a couple of small holes doesn't affect their integrity. If they were holding weight in a horizontal position, that would be a different story.

We have a tank with 2 holes drilled in the side planks to accommodate the tubing. I think it's exactly like you are talking about. It's never wobbled, creaked, buckled, or any other negative thing a stand could do. :) I can post a picture if you want to see how we have it done. let me know. Our Fishhouse

Thanks Derek. Actually, under the DIY forum, this post was still on the first page of topics. I guess this is why I didn't even look at the date. Most active forums have a much faster turnover and old stuff isn't still sitting around on the first page under a forum. I just signed up on this site, so I'm not as familiar around here. But thanks anyway for the warm welcome.
