  • For Thomas: Got Glass Scratches?

    Check it out foo.

Process is simpler for acrylic and results are better too.

But you might want to consider this for your glass tank.

Ok, I'll start on your tank.

          Buy me beer.

          I'll do it after a 6 pack.

Sounds like too much work for my lazy self. I rather buy a new tank, plus I got some stuff in the tank now that I would not want to risk that experiment on. :)

LOL! Nah..the scratches I have are too deep for that - IMO.

Thai, if my 180g is big enough - want to use it for your massive tank you are about to roll on?

Maybe I can help...The information provided is based on glass, not acrylic..
                              Tools:
Variable speed polisher - Prefered up to 3500 rpm. At lower speed, it won't do much.
Glass squeegee - any cheap one so you can wipe and inspect if scratches are visible
Cerium Oxide - 99% purity - Cerium oxide is what industry jewelers use to polish diamond and gold to make them shiny. The more the purity the better.
Polishing pad: Hard (hard) felt pad. If felt pad is too soft, the cerium will only soak through and won't be effective. Try leather if you can find some. Prefer 5-6 inches pad.
Flexible backer pad - If you decide to go with 5 inch felt pad, then you need 5 inch backer board
Spray water bottle - to hold mixed content of water and cerium oxide. Spray directly on glass or felt pad
Furniture dolly (option) – Easier move big tank and store after done.

Try it on: Fine scratches but if you got the will, nothing can stop that. Just remember too, if you polish deep scratches, there will be a ghosting/hue effect on your glass. So, to avoid ghosting/hue, a larger polishing area is required.

Don’t try it on: Deep scratches that finger nail can’t run through. If you have a few deep scratches, no problem. If whole tank has deep scratches, I would hesitate to start.
**Tanks with euro brace – absolutely no room to move arms around. If you have a few scratches, then sure
Hope the information can be a good starting point..good luck
