  • DYI duro pipes

Anyone here got a lot of experience with making duro pipes?

The last set I had on my 125g sucked and it made a lot of micro bubbles in the water.

From what I read, the duro pipe should make the water flow silence on RR tanks.

I need some help and tips if anyone got some.

    Thanks in advance guys.

mine is pretty quiet just a little splashing ...mostly from inside the overflow box because the dursos a little short.

did a quick drawing of a simple durso.

basically the cap on the durso is custom for the flow in your tank. you adjust it by drilling small holes to adjust the air flow being let into the drain, you want to use a small bit so you can fine tune the durso, by drilling one small hole and expanding it or by drilling several small holes ,which i've found to be easier. after drilling your first hole in the cap, install the durso and turn on your pump. you will notice the waterlevel will be rising and falling in the overflow box. continue to slowly drill more holes until the wter level becomes constant and you dont hear any gurgling or excessive noise.

Oh and make sure you dont have any bio-balls stuck in your pipes

How low is your water line inside the overflow box?

That's the exact same way my last one was but from some reason I could get the dang thing to shut up!

What type of connection are you using between the bulkhead under the dorso to the bulkhead on your sump?

Do you the piping design under the tank plays a part in how much noise is made?

None -- but then again its in the 180 and its well packed in there back against the wall.. there is 0 sound from that tank except for the hum of the MAG-18

The actual drainage into the Dursos I made for my tank is quiet but the one thing I can't get to quiet down is the amount of noise in the actual drain hose that comes after the bulkhead (inside the stand). I've tried the more common flex hoses that come with overflow skimmer boxes and right now I have the clear braided hoses that you can get from Home Depot. It's just a tad quieter than the flex hoses I had. I do get those microbubbles that you're talking about but they only shoot out of the return line 2-3 times a minute avg and in small amounts (and disappear within seconds). I would like to know how to get rid of them completely though.

I had this same problem. I tried flex house and PVC but both couldn't keep the noise down to a respectable level.

I used a Durso on my overflow and had the same problem with the gurgling noise. I did some research and made a Hofer Gurgle Buster and now I only hear the hum of the return pump. It was very simple to make and worked great for my application. Here is the link.

Did you ever have problems with noise from the piping work under your tank?

When you get back, lets go get the stuff. My tank should be in and ready by then. Got to have durso pipes, Linda will be pissed.

My design will be quite, I hope. If it sounds like the 90g, we're good to go.
