  • Making A Tank Divider...

Does anyone have any ideas how to make an inexpensive tank divider...one that's similar to those that are sold in the stores?

you could try by taking so of the egg crate that they use for lights ,,, cut it to size, and take 1 rock on each side of egg crate and that will work... not the greatest of ideas but i have seen it done before.....

I did that once with the flourecent light lattice.  It worked relatively well, but the aggressive fish eventually found a way past is by squirming between the top of the divider and the hood.  It worked 2-3 times until once he got stuck and died.

Go to the craft section of walmart, or to an actual craft store and get a sheet of "plastic canvas".  It comes in various sized sheets so measure your tank before you go and bring a small tape measure with you.  The stuff is about 2$ for a good sized sheet.  Usually the large sheet only comes in white, smaller pieces can be found in a rainbow of different colors.  To hold it still across the tank, I used some of those report cover edgings on all four edges of the canvas to stiffen it, and buried it deep in the gravel.  A few suction cups strategically placed will keep it from falling over whenever someone tries to scale the 'wall'.  You could also tac it in place with a dab of silicone.

These days, use the light grid for my crays, - the've gotten too big to fit through those holes.

When I kept flowerhorns I made my own dividers out of plexi-glass.  I would buy sheets from Lowes, HomeDepot, etc. then cut to fit the tank.  I would also drill holes throughout the sheet to allow water flow through the glass.  I would use suction cups to hold it in place by using 2 or 3 at the top and bottom of the glass.  It actually worked well with the larger aggressive fish.

Where would I get suction cups small enough to hold that?

My guess is probably wrong but maybe they're talking about the small suction cups you use to hold airlines in place or replacement heater suction cups?  I'm sure someone will be along with a better answer as I don't think either of the above would be strong enough to hold a divider in place.

That's what I was thinkin'   I'm see which other suggestions are made, but those are pretty good so far.

You can buy all that stuff from the craft aisle of wal mart, or, if you lived near Crosby, obtain it for free from me.

The plast sheets are less than two bucks, and are found in the crochet section, the suction cups are found near there and a package can be bought for around a dollar per package (3-6 cups per package depending on the size you get)

The good news is, these sheets already have small holes throughout them, so you dont have to poke any.

Genius! I was thinking of the plastic mesh, but wouldn't have EVER thought of using those report cover edgings!! I have a stack of these mesh sheets at home that I was planning on using for a moss wall, and they're easy enough to cut through and "expand" the holes to fit any size suction cup, but that's when it's against the back wall. Szidlon, do you mean the suction cups with the little clamps?

Ramius...can you describe the suction cup a lil' bit more (i.e. what's their intended use) b/c I didn't really think to look for them in that section.

BRILLIANT!!!       (as I say in my best Guiness beer commercial voice).

                          well.....

They come in four sizes, from micro, small med large

They are made by a company named adams and look kinda like this

If I remember right they were only a dollar, no more than two for sure.

The micro ones come with about six or eight to a package I think

Oh for their intended use, in the picture the suction cup is holding up a watermelon.

It says it's for suncatchers signs decorations and more on the package.

They have metal clasps on them that I just peeled off when I used in my tank
