    Project Mouse Trap:
When the cat’s away, the mice will play. (The wife is out of town)

As some may know I have been designing a new build for my 110 gal tall. While talking with a friend he said he had a 110 gal long he could not use in his new apartment and I could have it for cheap if I would pick it up. So on the way home Thursday I picked up a new tank with all accessories, including Fluval 404, .stand, and lights

Once I got home I striped the tank down and cleaned it and hatched out a design plan, tested the filter, and determined what parts I wanted to replace.

Next I placed the filter intake/return, and laid out my egg crate support for the soon to be aquarium scape.

Then I spent the day breaking rocks to small strips and doing a double cleaning cycle to remove any bacteria or foreign growth. This consisted of a 1/10 water bleach soak and then a clean water rise. I used a brush to scrub the rocks during this process.

Getting closer I started to place the strips along the back of the tank building a backdrop. I use an aquarium safe silicone to hold the rocks to each other and to the back glass. I also put in a “love cave”

The almost final step is the placement of plants. Once the silicone has cured I will be filling with water.

It was a long day, but when the wife is out of town I get to do what I want and this is it. I will be working on “Project Pescado” now, but it will take months since I am building everything myself. Hope you like the tank and let me know if you have any comments on design or fish suggestions. I thinking south american cichlids, but not hard set.

You "came up" on a great looking tank . The aquascaping is cool...but it may be a great trap for "poop" . The only thing that I think would look better with your setup...would be the use of pool filter sand . Something about the current substrate just doesn't quite "click" for me . I think a more natural color substrate like pool filter sand would look better with slate rock . Plus..the PFS will brighten the tank and let the eyes focus more on the background .

I plan to use sand on my next build, this was just put together with stuff I already had plus what came with the tank. This was just a quick put together to have while I work on my other tank. when I do my water changes I will be siphoning the rock wall. My other tank has a rock wall on it and never had any problems. Fish would not stop making babies, every 2 weeks.

Edit: Water now in tank and pumps running.

Looks nice. I like the rock wall. But the gravel HAS to go. I know it was free but spend the money on some sand. I promise you the tank will look a lot better.

Put some Pool Filter sand in it from Leslies Pool. It's pretty cheap and you could probably get away with 2 bags.

The PFS is about $10 for a 50lbs bag. It does not say leslies on it anymore. They told me they changed the name on the bag but its still the same sand. The best thing about this sand is that its heavy and not easy to vacume up. So you dont lose much when you clean the poop. It also makes it easy to see uneaten and fish waste. Its worth the $10 a bag.

I will remove what gravel I can and replace with pool filter sand. I will be away for a few days, but will post pics when I return.

Nice job. I agree that sand would be better as your substrate.

OK now what..... I removed the gravel and bought 2 50# bags of pool filter sand. The sand i got came from warehouse pools and has the name "Sea Gull" on it. It says it is a silica based, triple filtered, sanitized, etc. Is this sand OK? It is not white, but tan. I put in some, but did not want to put it all in till I hear from the pros. Please Advise.
                      Thanks

PFS is a tan color and not white.

So I am good to dump in the rest? It clouds the water as I pour it in.

Personally, I would rinse it in a 5 gallon bucket before pouring into tank to remove some of the dust created from shipment.

The new sand is looking good, BUT. The tank is cloudy and the filter I am running does NOT filter out small particles (I think) Fluval 404. Is there a filter I can get for not too mucj that I can hook up when needed to filter out small particles? Or do I need another full time filter/ water polisher? I will not be having any live plants. Once the water is clear, I will post some pics and start to work on fish stock.

I am thinking about this filter. any comments
