I had a tank spring a leak this past Spring and the Tetra EX20 I had on it burned up from pumping dry. Last night I took the pump off and ran a hose from a maxijet 1200 to the EX20 resevoir thingie to make a 300ish GPH HOB. My only concern is whether the media is going to have sufficient time to actually do any filtering since the resevoir is so small.

Are you wanting Bio filtration or mechanical? It might make a good mechanical filter. Just keep an eye on the filter pads. If they clog it could over flow. But most HOB's are designed so if they over flow it will run into the tank. Are you making your own filter pads for this filter?

I guess just mechanical filtration would be OK. I'm going to run this thing on a 65 troph growout tank along with either 2 Aquatech 30-60s or 1 Aquatech 30-60 and 1 Aquaclear110. The big filters should do most of the biological filtration.

As for pads, it came with this plastic piece that has a bunch of soft and hard bristles and another clamshell like piece. I filled the clamshell with AC filter pad and quilt batting.

Does the powerhead have any head height loss or does it work better because it is low in the water? Just curious.

you can always put some kind of ball joint on the hose between the maxi and the filter and tune down the flow.

After watching it run and giving it some thought, I'm going to keep the high flow. Since the output is a smaller area, it really breaks up the water surface which is good for aeration. Where the tank is located, I can't put a wet/dry on it so aeration is a definite concern.

I'm going to build an internal wet dry this weekend. 2' x 4" pvc pipe $6 4" test cap $1 I'll cut crenellations in the top and a hole in the side of the bottom for the pump output. Drop the pump in, cut a few filter pads to fit, fill with bioballs, and top off with quilt batting. I'll probably use the 290GPH I already have. I may get one of those AC 110s off ya. Still thinking about it...
