  • Tank modifaction

    hi all

as u all know (or dont know) i have a pretty shi**y small tank and want to keep them all the inhabitants alive and have stumbled upon this problem.

first problem is i have 2 ghost catfish, one which is perfectly healthy and the other one who has a wonky tail (was like that when we bought him cuz we thought it was cute) which struggles sometimes with the current.

this one has scared me quite a few times as its been seen on the bottom of the tank motionless so im now trying to modify the tank to suit its needs.

specs: 34 litre (roughly 7 gallons if i remember correctly)
intergrated drip down filter (causing the main current)

so wat i am trying to do is block off the holes with silicon maybe or a piece of plastic so as to block the flow off completely n puncture a hole in the side of the filter side to let it leak out of its own will.

    any suggestions?

Mind taking a picture of the "integrated drip down filter"?

Do you mean like an overflow? Or is it a eclipse brand tank with hood/filter combo?

Yeah, I think the different terminology is the problem! Not sure what an integrated drip down filter is...

You could always post a link to a picture of one (manufacturers website, or something similar), that could help.

I believe what you are looking to accomplish is slow down or restrict the flow from the filter, to give your gimpy fish a break in the current eh? .....why not just add some kind of sponge type media in front of the area where the water is released into the tank? Can that be done easily?

Maybe a tall decorative ornament could be placed under the filter return to break up the flow???

Maybe I'm on the wrong trail here, you maybe asking about dividing the tank in half???

" Is wonky a technical term?"   It is if you think in "litres".

yeh i am tring to make the flow slower for the 'wonky' fish n i think the sponge might work but i think thats gna deteriorate over time. iwas thinking of sealing up the bottom water outlets with silicon so the water can come out of the side... ill try to find pics

Sponges will last a pretty long time...just have to clean them every now and then.

Or you could get some small media and stuff it with that.

I you make the holes smaller, all other things being equal - then the flow will be higher through the fewer or smaller holes.   If you want to slow down the flow then you need larger or more holes.
