  • DIY Overflow/Sump

Hey, I am trying to make a sump for a 55gallon saltwater aquarium I am getting soon. The biggest problem I am having is designing the overflow. I don't want to wake up to my fish dead and water all over the floor. Please comment if you have any suggestions or any experience with this topic. Thanks!

I've made PVC overflows before, and I go with and recommend HOB overflows now. There are plenty of how-to's on YouTube. Just type in "DIY overflow".

Have you looked at the e-shopps overflow box? Not the whole get-up, but just the overflow box. They are reasonably priced.

With resale on these things being so fairly priced I would suggest save the headache and possible failure and purchase a HOB overflow as well.

.... That is probably the way to go. If my tank floods I am dead and will loose all my aquariums!!

            personally, i would either
            1) drill the tank bottom and attach an internal overflow box with a durso standpipe.
            2) drill the tank sides just below the waterline and attach a smaller overflow box through a bulkhead fitting.
Of course you'll have to make sure that your glass is NOT tempered.
            but that's just me.

I found a very easy pvc overflow design on YouTube. I think I will switch from the overflow box I have now to the pvc due to the self priming aspect of it. I have come home to a floor full of water before due to power outage. I have been looking for a solution ever since. Quick, easy, cheap, and effective fix.

YES it gives you alot of headaches and stuff but when you accomplish making it... it makes you feel great that you actually make the item instead of buying it... lol

I think I might go out tomorrow and get materials to begin my first DIY project. Estimating under $20. Will let you know how it turns out. http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_u...?v=65yVr7DiDls
This is a link to a video showing the setup I will be attempting.

I know nothing about sw tanks but whenever I see this question asked, the general consensus is put whatever will fit under your stand. Take up as much space as possible. The bigger the better. I am guessing that this is universal concept between fw and sw.

For a sw tank you need the sump to be atleast ⅓ the size of the tank. So for a 55 you would need at least 20 gallons
