Is it safe for your tank to over-hang?

i need to switch up tank sizes to accomodate all my growing livestock. the stand i got is for a 30Long and measures 36x18x12 whereas i'm thinking maybe instead of hunting high and low for a rare 30L, i should just say screw it and buy a 40B which measures 36x18x16.
now on the one hand this is a good thing because if i can find one, i want one drilled on the bottom back corners so the overhang will leave space for those fittings and pipes behind the stand,on the other hand, 4 inches is a BIG overhang and i guess i'd be worried about putting too much stress on the edge of the tank.
it'll probably be the standard aqueon type deal with the black plastic lip, will that help at all?
any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks!

I was planning on doing this as well to upgrade my tank but I was going to use a sheet of plywood to match the footprint of the 40B then lay that on top of the 30L stand which will work fine. I would not just allow it to hang over on it's own though.

You could always ask CityPets or HAW to order the 30L from the local tank peoples.

Keep in mind that the tank rests on the trim so if the tank overhangs then that backside is not getting supported which will lead to tank failure. The plywood idea should work great. Just make sure the plywood isn't bowing.

If it's not a stand that has the trim surrounding finisher then you could easily distribute the additional hang off which would leave very minimal on each side.

+1 to beefyg, you will spring a leak unless all sides of the frame are supported. 3/4" plywood or MDF would work plus you can buy trim to cover the ends. i think i would still run a 1" x 1" stringer along the front and back and screw that into the stand frame but then i tend to overengineer things. you have to bear in mind that water weighs 8.1 lbs/gal so a 40G can get pretty heavy with substrate in place. i moved my 75g with water removed but decor / substrate / pissed off ancistrus cats in place. i figured that myself and another ex bodybuilder buddy could handle it. we almost died lol.

lol, well, between myself and my wife, a FULL drain and move, i think we should be able to manage it. anyways, i went ahead and solved all of my problems with fitting a 40b onto my stand by....just buying a 30L after all :-)
tank move is already scheduled for tonight! whoop whoop, that happened faster than i thought! in the end though i went with an undrilled tank for simplicity for the time being, when i can find a cheap enough hob overflow on craigslist or whatever, i'll sort out turning the old tank into a sump, but for now, i know my goni and my sea pen will both at least appreciate the extra room to stretch out :-)
