  • drift wood?

i live in galveston so drift wood is not uncommon to find i have a question.... my neighbor had a big unique piece of drift wood laying in there yard they found it on the beach if i took it boiled it and soaked it for a while you think it would be safe to use in a fresh water tank or would there be more stuff i need to do before i could use it

Soak in bleach water then, rinse and soak in fresh water until smell of bleach is no longer detected. May take several days of soaking and rinsing but it does work. You can also use declorinator to speed up process.

I was just curious if the type of tree made a difference and if this would work on a piece I got from a tree we pushed over last year? I saved the piece but have been worried about what it would leach into the water.

Depends on the age of the tree,in my opinion. Has it rotted any? What type of tree. Is the outer surface smooth? Bleaching won't remove all chemicals that the tree has absorbed.

The tree we knocked over was rotten at the top and the bottom half was in good condition. I want to say it was a magnolia tree. I've been soaking it in a tub outside off and on for the last year. (Darn Mosquitoes)

I would have to say it would be your own personal call. If you were to take the above steps, I would say that it would help. But there is no guarantee, just like with store bought pieces. I will say this, ADG has some amazing pieces or sale.

We have a place on the water in east Matagorda. Becuase of the drout last year and all the rain. We are getting now. The drift wood is everywhere. most monster hard woods. some small root groups. lots of drift wood. The rivers around Matagorda feed the gulf and wash the fallin hard woods in to the gulf and on to the beachs. it is the beast place to get free drift wood.

It's a really good looking peice of driftwood. I wouldn't drill on it. When you put it in the tank. Keep an anti fungle in the house. So if it turns the water fowl You can fix it Quick. But I don't think It will need it.
