Ramble away! I love the idea and am very interested if you pull it off. Please take pics of your build so I can see how you did it.

a reactor or even the water filter housing DIY will probably make more sense, but if you have a 2211 just sitting there or buy a used one you already have a low flow filter for this purpose.

Raul you think a 2232ecco canister will work for this?

I am not that familiar with the ecco models but I assume this is the one that uses baskets maybe in one basket you can put purigen and cover it with a fine mesh, the problem I see and maybe I am wrong is that the flow goes from top to bottom so I will think the purigen it is just going to act as filter media and not with the fluidity effect because the water will push it down.

There is no other way than to try it but not sure if you will be able to see how the purigen is handling the flow.

I think it would work for pretty much any canister filter.

I was thinking of using one of those marineland hob canisters. that would make maintaining easier and i could move it from tank to tank if i needed lol

do you mean the magnum HOT? i thought about using one as a DE type water polishing unit. some people use the fine filter catridge and run DE through it until it sticks and then drop it onto an aquarium (without losing prime) for polishing. a bag of purigen in the middle might work too. the HOT is set up like the 350 though so i am speculating that it should work great as a reactor

The HOT would be awesome at it but my only problem with it would be that they push mad gph

put a ball valve upstream of the HOT to throttle the flow, you can leave it wide open to prime it and then scale back. an impellor isnt a positive displacement type pump (which is why it cant generate much head pressure) so that should work without any problems. there might be a point where some cavitation could happen and an old impellor might rattle around a bit but i think that it should work. i will eventually get around to trying this myself

On the bottom I use the normal spacer that the eheim has and then then contraption.
