Very nice Job. Thanks for Sharing...

Cat carbon is the way to go, But D^#m $$. I can get PVC, have the hookup on that.

I'm going to use your parts list and see how much of it I can pickup free that would bring down the cost.

            okay a few questions...

            1) am i correct that the barb fitting on the 1/2" dip tube (the center fitting which i assume is the inlet) is male NPT and you are threading that into the female npt x slip joint coupling that i see on the inside? is that an oring in between making the seal?

            2) how is the other barbed fitting (the output?) sealed? i looks like it might also be male npt and you have secured it with the 1/2" pipe cap? i assume that you drilled out the cap so that the water can escape there? is there an oring down in the cap making a seal against a shoulder of some sort?

            3) why is there a second slip joint coupling in the 1/2" dip tube near the top? did you stuff that with the sewing grid so that the carbon doesnt come back out when you back flush?

            4) is there a reason you have a intake strainer on the garden hose that you are using? are you filtering out of the tap or running this with a garden pump while the water is in another container?

            thanks!

                        3) why is there a second slip joint coupling in the 1/2" dip tube near the top? did you stuff that with the sewing grid so that the carbon doesnt come back out when you back flush? i used the second one b/c i bought a precut 1/2" and it was slightly shorter then what i needed so i extended it with the slip coupling cuz i had extra pvc around the house

                        4) is there a reason you have a intake strainer on the garden hose that you are using? are you filtering out of the tap or running this with a garden pump while the water is in another container?
i dont have a python so i use garden hose cuz its cheaper... i use the Intake strainer (only use it b/c i had an extra one and wasnt planning using it one any filter) b/c it can be hooked onto the tank without falling out (same thing as clipping the hose on the tank)
                        thanks![/QUOTE]

okay now figure out how much prime you are using over the life expectancy of a cat carbon system. i have read three years isnt unreasonable for that time frame. Is it worth 25 bucks in centaur yet?

and thanks for the answers above^^ i dont think u mentioned a pipe tap. is that a type where you wrote 1/2 pipe cap because i dont see a cap fitting anywhere? and where did you use the sewing grid? it it up with the strainer grid to provide smaller holes?

great job, if you went back and put more step descriptions in it would no doubt immortally be stickied!

if you make one you can do it for me and you can have all the props you want... i just posted this DIY b/c EK asked me to... i really dont care much about props or anything... its a very simple concept to build this thing... i just added a couple extra nick nacks just for looks... in the future i will be buying a carbon bottle but as of now i dont have the space nor the money to spend on a large carbon bottle...

so the design you came up with is basically kinda like a reactor correct?

the water goes down the PVC then back up and through the carbon and then out the outlet?

It uses the same concept as a reactor where the water is forced down through the center and has to "fluidize" through the media back up.

I much prefer this design over the "snake" cause the delivery tube hits the bottom and then goes through the distributor plate which evenly disperse the flow throughout it all and the added contact through fluidization would mean a more efficient process.
