but wouldnt the snake have more contact time for the water purification? for a filter that is in a recirculating loop the old debate about contact time versus flow rate would apply (as its a moot point in the long run really) but this is a one pass filter. reactors purify / condition because they are in a circular path and are working continuously, that would not be true in this case. i would think for it to condition the water completely that you would need to have some of the output recirculate back through the media. if you slow the flow down to provide more contact time then you will not be fluidizing the media? i'm not being critical, just putting that out there for thought.
this design is very similar to a sand pool filter and a cheap / small one would have a backflush valve installed as well, i wonder if there is something to be learned there since i know my old one had a six way valve on it and would recirculate internally. they would take up as much space as a snake in a tub though.
and kiko, dont take any the above as about props...its not. i just think its a cool idea and could be a go to article just like fshfrk's carbon snake. some things just werent immediately clear to me as far as building it and those should be expanded on imo. i was also commenting because i am surprised how few stickies are used here, many of the same questions about carbon bottles / snakes keep coming up and this artilce could be one of the two that could remedy that condition.
